Red light district
Amsterdam's Red Light District features tall, thin buildings pinched together near its tree-lined canals. The district is aesthetically magnificent and covers a large part of the historic city. As darkness falls, the district becomes increasingly busy with patrons. Red florescent lights secured above windows on the buildings produce a deep glow to be seen from afar.
Dating back to the 14th Century, the Red Light District is famous for housing "female company". Today the district is filled with brothels, sex shops, gay bards, hotels, cinemas and various types of museums. Although an infamous part of Amsterdam, the district is a major tourist attraction.
