The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam

Located on the Museumplein, The Rijkmuseum (State Museum) is dedicated to arts, crafts, and history. It was founded in 1800 to display the stadtholder's art collections and currently owns the largest collection of paintings from the Dutch Golden Age in the world, together with a substantial one of Asian art. Amongst the masterpieces on display, one can see can admire many works by Rembrandt, Vermeer and Frans Hals.

The building was designed by Cuypers, who won the design contest only to a second round, with a combination of gothic and renaissance elements. During the years the museum underwent restorations, starting in 1890 when a fragment building was added. From 2003 until 2010 the museum is going under more renewals, and the collection is on display at the Philips wing.
