Frans Hals (1581/85-1666)

Son of a weaver of Antwerp, Frans Hals war born some time between 1581 and 1585. His family had fled Spain in 1585 to settle to Haarlem. In 1610 Frans Hals became a member of the painters' guild, after having been the pupil of Karel van Mander. His style was loose and it was known by his contemporaries as the rough style. Amongst Frans Hals' apprentices there probably was his younger brother Dirck and Gerrit Berckheyde. During his career Frans Hals focused on portraits and militia.
